A colour hardener is a blend of cement, fine aggregate (sand), mineral pigments, and proprietary hardening additives. It’s usually supplied as a dry powder in bags and broadcast by hand onto freshly placed, still-wet concrete.
You don’t have to use a colour hardener with stamped concrete — but it’s highly recommended if you want richer colour, better definition, and a harder, longer-lasting surface.
Colour hardener and release agent play different but complementary roles in decorative concrete. The colour hardener is applied first and is responsible for creating the base colour while also forming a hard, durable surface layer. Once this is in place, the release powder is used to add a secondary accent colour and introduce texture and contrast. When the surface is stamped, these two elements work together, allowing the colour hardener and release agent.
